New Fabrics Created for Day of Dead Collection of Quilts

Posted by Jean Abbott on Thursday, June 9, 2011,
It is my dream to create a collection of quilts that all reflect Day of the Dead images that I love to work with. Each image will become a quilt. The Sugar Skulls will become the center of the quilt, they should be incredible once they are all together.

New Week New Challenges

Posted by Jean Abbott on Monday, May 30, 2011,
As Sunday comes to a close, I am reminded of the upcoming week as I look at the bed in my studio and it's covered in fabrics. I have a new quilt top to begin using the beautiful fabrics of the southwest theme and it makes me think of my amazing parents. They loved the desert. To them, it was home. When everyone saw dirt and dust and those awful cactus; where everything living there bites you in one way or the other, they say beauty. The birds that could build a nest in the needles of a cactus...

Morning After

Posted by Jean Abbott on Monday, May 30, 2011,
Sounds like a party over here .... well in a way it is. I had a lovely winner for the little Sewphie and I am finished with the wedding dress and last night I cleaned up my studio again. That does seems to be a theme of mine doesn't it, but it felt wonderful to get everything back into order and lay out the fabric for the next project. I have been working on a Queen size quilt custom ordered and it's been such fun. She has been collecting fabric for it for a while. The amazing thing about th...

Wedding Dress Blues

Posted by Jean Abbott on Wednesday, May 25, 2011,
I love sewing, always have and hope always will but sometimes I have a problem telling people no when they ask me to help them with a project or other sewing related issues.  Let's back up a bit. I am in the middle of making a non traditional wedding dress for someone I know and it's been a very complicated project.  It started out a mess and I am trying to find the pieces that will make it work.  I don't have a pattern just a little drawing of what she hopes it will look like sort of.
I love...

Art verses Function

Posted by Jean Abbott on Sunday, May 22, 2011,
Recently, one of my quilts was picked to be a part of a pop up store in the Museum of Contemporary Craft and I had the privilege of seeing it there with all the other artist and creators that were also chosen and I have to admit, it looked amazing.  They had hung it up on the wall as more of an art piece instead of the baby quilt it was created to be.  It was lovely to look upon and it made me appreciate this rare opportunity to see my work in such a way.  So often we create and I love the p...

Memories

Posted by Jean Abbott on Monday, April 25, 2011,
Today was Easter.  It was one of those holidays I always enjoyed with the kids.  There was something wonderful about surprising them with their Easter baskets.  Each needing to be similar and yet different. I remember when they were small it was about candy and toys and as they got older it was about candy and things like fingernail polish or gameboy games.  One by one they grow and move on and start creating their own life's.  They fill their days with friends and events that you know...

Working Piles

Posted by Jean Abbott on Tuesday, April 19, 2011,

I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but it seems I work best with piles all around me. I clean my studio vowing to myself, I shall keep it clean and before the day is over the tables have bits and pieces of this and that and the bed has fabric and scraps all over it.  The trim drawer is out on top of a jumper I need to finish and at least two quilts and their parts are scattered about.  I have ...

I's the Little Thing in Life

Posted by Jean Abbott on Friday, April 15, 2011,
Have you ever noticed it's the little things in life that either make you happy or make you crazy?  Today when I came home from shopping for groceries, I couldn't park anywhere near the house and had to carry groceries two block and make several trips... this makes me crazy.  Now I could look at it as a mini workout and consider myself lucky to be able to walk and carry groceries.  I can see that after they are in the house and put away but not when I first drive up... But the other thing tha...

One Down, Four Hundred to Go

Posted by Jean Abbott on Sunday, April 3, 2011,
This morning, I awoke to find I had reached a personal goal.  100 hearts in my Etsy shop.  It doesn't mean 100 sales, though I might wish for that next. Nor does it mean I'm off to Paris because I won the lottery.  It just means that at least 100 people have looked at my work and enjoyed it.  Some have purchased, some have left sweet notes and words of encouragement.  Others have just left their heart, but it's touched me nonetheless.  I am so enjoying working on creating Mama Jean's Kind Thr...

Bits and Pieces full of Smiles and Memories

Posted by Jean Abbott on Thursday, March 31, 2011,
For the past two weeks, Day of the Dead skeletons dancing and celebrating, along with a rainbow of vibrant colors has been living on my design table and in my heart. The quilt I just finished was special for lots of reasons, but mostly, because the customer had a dream of a quilt and had been collecting fabrics for years waiting for the perfect moment for it to come to life.  So, I've cut, stitched and created a beautiful quilt out of them that I hope she enjoys and comes to treasure. I know ...

What Do I Think

Posted by Jean Abbott on Monday, March 21, 2011,
Recently I have spent a lot of time thinking about what I want for Mama Jean's Kind Threads.  I cut fabric and I think about it, I sew and I think about it, People ask what's new or how's it going and I think about it. I realized today, I want to just dream more about it.  I need to dream the future I want to see and stop thinking.  Thinking has never really been my strong suit.  Feeling,...

Organic Quilting

Posted by Jean Abbott on Saturday, March 19, 2011,

The process I love most in creating quilts is what I have come to call organic quilting.  No, it doesn't mean that I have gone over the deep end.  Some may question that but it means I love to start with an idea; we'll call that the garden plots.  Now I need to make sure that everything is ready toil and I till over ideas in my head I see colors playing with each other, are they playing ...

To Treasure

Posted by Jean Abbott on Saturday, March 19, 2011,
In Etsy, you can create treasuries of things that you love, like or think of as just a bit off the plum as they might say.  It's a fun way to sort through the thousands of beautiful handmade items created all over the world.  They make you feel more, see more and dream more.  You can get lost in the beauty of one artist for hours or laugh out loud when you fall into a shop of whimsy.  It inspires you to strive a bit more for the work that lives just beneath the surface of what you knew or tho...

Quilts Created From Magic

Posted by Jean Abbott on Tuesday, March 15, 2011,

Starting a new project is always so exciting.  To lay out the new fabrics and see them all start to play together on the table is amazing.  But truth be told, the process started long before then.  I think it's the same for many creative hearts.  Some of us aren't the type that follow outlines and rules and have date books, in fact, I can't tell you how many calendars and organizers I've tried over the years and before you know it, I can't remember where it is or that I even owned it.  ...

A Day of Rest

Posted by Jean Abbott on Sunday, March 13, 2011,
Daylight savings time always feels a bit out of sorts for me.  I know it's all an allusion but still losing that hour, where does it go?  I am trying to learn balance between working and resting.  Working from home it' s easy to pop on the computer and work on a needful project or check and see what's happening on your site but then your mind begins to think of other things you haven't finished or started and you start to get pulled into your studio and before you know it you've worked throug...

Recreating

Posted by Jean Abbott on Sunday, March 6, 2011,
Recreating is to give back life not only to the object but also to the world, and working with recycled materials fills me with passion. Over the years I have collected fabrics from antique stores, estate sales, resale outlets to take the old and make into new is magic to me. Last year I discovered a group of artist working together to bring reclaimed and recycled products to people and became a member of Trillium Artisans. A dedicated organization that supporting local artist and reclaimed a...

Artist Worth

Posted by Jean Abbott on Monday, February 28, 2011,
Whenever I receive a special request from a customer or potential customer I find myself getting a bit twitter patted as the old expression goes.  I want to make them happy, I want to do the work but then I worry that I will not charge enough for the amount of time it will take or they will think I am charging to much for the work.  Working with Trillium I understand the equation of getting paid to make sure that you are getting a fair wage but sometimes the time to create is longer than anyo...

New Quilts Finished This Week

Posted by Jean Abbott on Saturday, February 26, 2011,
It seemed to be a good week for creating as I was able to finish two quilt tops and then I was able to get one of them quilted and ready to sell.  They are both what I would call baby quilts but very different in all aspects.  One is a sweet quilt with bright rainbow colors surrounding fussy cut blocks of young Hispanic Children playing and Dancing.  My favorite block however is the...

Creating Mama Jean's

Posted by Jean Abbott on Friday, February 18, 2011,

I have been working on creating Mama Jeans and the holidays seemed to keep me busy what with family and fairs and such and then January came along.  I cleaned the studio organized fabrics worked on a few things and tried to keep moving forward.  But somewhere along this path I hit a bit of a roadblock.  I think the reality of doing this is a bit scary and I came face to face with it.  Scheduling my time and having a goal sounds simple but reality is,  it's a lot harder than it looks.  I am t...
